For the last four years Brooklyn based
photographer, Peter Beste has been documenting Norwegian
black metal, a pagan influenced extreme Heavy Metal movement
from Scandinavia. In the early 1990's these self-proclaimed
Satanists burned fourteenth Century wooden churches, desecrated
graveyards, and incited blood feuds as part of their campaign
to rid Norway of Christianity and revert to ancient Viking
customs.
More recently, Beste has been spending time in his hometown
of Houston, Texas photographing the city's ghettos, black
nightclubs, and gangster rappers for an upcoming book
and exhibition.
Beste has had solo exhibitions in London, New York, San
Francisco, Austin, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Osaka, Oslo, and
Bergen. His work has appeared in The Face, American Photo,
Vice, London Observer, Spin, Dazed and Confused, Graphic,
XXL, Mass Appeal, Revolver, and many others. His book
of Norwegian \ Black Metal photographs was released this
year in Japan.
